Apprenticeship FAQ's

What is an apprenticeship?

An Apprenticeship mixes on-the-job training with learning. It will provide you with the skills you need for your chosen career that will also lead to nationally recognised qualifications. As an apprentice you earn while you learn and receive other benefits as well. Apprenticeships are real jobs for real people.

Why should I do an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a great way for you to get into paid employment whilst continuing your education, and is a viable alternative to college or university.

How do I apply for an apprenticeship?

To apply for an apprenticeship position online, go to our Learner Vacancies section. If you can’t find the job you’re looking for, you can contact our team via email at learnerrecruitment@skillsforgrowth.org.uk or you can speak to Lily or Victoria on 020 8221 0500 between 9-5pm, Monday to Friday.

How much do apprentices get paid?

The National Minimum Wage is £3.50 per hour for apprentices aged 16 to 18 and those aged 19 or over who are in the first year of their apprenticeship. Many employers will pay you more as you develop your skills – the average apprentice takes home around £170 per week. More on the National Minimum Wage here: www.gov.uk/national-minimum-wage-rates

What holidays and annual leave are apprentices entitled to?

Apprentices are entitled to the same statutory minimum as other employees. Employers often subtract the 8 public holidays from this allowance each year. More on Holiday Entitlement here: www.gov.uk/holiday-entitlement-rights

Do I have to be in full time employment to do an Apprenticeship?

In order to complete an apprenticeship you must be employed a minimum of 30 hours per week.

How long does an apprenticeship last?

An apprenticeship lasts a year on average.

Students tend to get a lot of discounts in places, do apprentices get similar offers?

Yes of course! All Apprentices are eligible to get an Apprentice NUS extra card, which costs £11 for a year. The NUS extra card offers discounts in dozens of shops, restaurants and entertainment locations (Thorpe Park, Cinemas, etc) You can apply here: www.apprenticeextra.co.uk

Traineeship FAQ's

What is a Traineeship?

Traineeships are designed to help young people who want to get an apprenticeship or job but don’t yet have appropriate skills or experience.

What qualifications do you need to do a Traineeship course?

None. Traineeships are for young people who have little or no work experience but are focused on work or the prospect of it.

How will I know if I am eligible for a Traineeship?

In order to be eligible for a Traineeship, if you are 16-24, you must not hold a full Level 3 qualification.

How many hours a week is the course?

Traineeships are approximately 30-35 hours of guided learning per week. This will be made up of time at one of our training sites, and time spent with an Employer for your work placement.
