As it's National Apprenticeship Week 2017 we thought we'd interview some of our ex-apprentices to find out how their careers have developed since being on an Apprenticeship Programme.

Emma Hart | Receptionist, 25

How did your journey start? How did you find out about apprenticeships?

I left school in year 9 without completing any qualifications. I did not have much interested for my future prospects at the time; an interview was arranged with a personal advisor at Connexions. Because my confidence was very low at that point in my life the personal advisor at Connexions recommended a course called E2E (Entry to Employment), this would give me the opportunity to work on my confidence and to also gain basic skills at the same time in order to progress on to an apprenticeship.

Tell us about your employer and the kind of work you are currently undertaking?

I currently work for an Organisation called Skills for Growth who supports 16 – 24 year olds in to the world of work whilst gaining qualifications in the process. My role at the Organisation is a receptionist at the Stratford site, prior to this I worked at our Bexleyheath site for a number of years which was including roles of an Administrator and an Administrator in Examinations.

What is life as an apprentice is really like?

My personal experience of being an apprentice was thoroughly enjoyable, there were struggles and challenges along the way but I overcome them all which made my strength as a determined individual widen.

What does the future hold? You are qualified now, so what plans do you have for the future? Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?

I am very much a; live every day as it comes type of person so I don’t have a solid plan for the new five years, what I am sure of is I will have progressed as an individual and in my career within the next five years, watch this space!!

How would you encourage others to take up an apprenticeship?

I would encourage anyone I come across that was unsure about doing an apprenticeship to go for it, it is a learning process, it may not go smooth sailing but it will be worth it in the long run. JUST STICK WITH IT!!! :)
