Why do people make New Year’s resolutions? Well the obvious answer is to make positive changes in their lives. This tradition is carried out by vast numbers of people all over the world and dates back as far 4000 years ago to the Babylonians who used to make promises to their gods at the start of every New Year to earn favour with them.

So have you taken the start of 2016 to be an opportunity to make a change for the better? As every new day arrives so does an opportunity for change. My advice to you is to look at yourself and ask, “what can I do today to improve my life?” It doesn’t have to be a massive change. It could be as simple as something as reading the newspaper to get a better understanding of what is going on around you, or take the stairs instead of the lift to your flat to improve your health and fitness. In fact, you are much more likely to stick to your resolutions if they are manageable and realistic. Anything top outlandish is likely to set you up to fail. You also want to take on one thing at a time. Too many resolutions will likely result in you losing focus. You should record your progress and reward yourself as you start to see improvement. One of the most important things is to share your resolution with someone; if you are only accountable to yourself you are more likely to give-up or let it slide. So talk to someone you trust and remember why you have made this change. You want to improve your life.

Let’s make this year your year.

Good luck and Happy New Year.
